Harriet Chung

Guest Contemporary Teacher

Harriet began her professional career as principal dancers in several dance companies; the Ontario Ballet Theatre (Toronto), The Empire State Ballet (New York), and Xing Dance Theatre (Toronto). It was during her time with Xing Dance Theatre where she came under the tutelage of renowned choreographer Xing Bang Fu and learned how to fuse together classical and contemporary ballet.

The pivotal point in her career was when she was offered a contract to be the principal dancer at Ballet British Columbia, while performing in the Toronto production of The Phantom of the Opera. Although it had been her dream to join Canada's foremost contemporary ballet company, Ballet BC, turning down their offer flourished her love for musical theatre. Shortly after, she was given the great opportunity to join the most successful musical theatre production in German history, Cats, in Hamburg, Germany (which we sang in German).

Most recently, Harriet played the title role in the world premiere of the award winning musical Golden Lotus in Hong Kong where I received a 2015 Hecklers Award Nomination for Best Actress. Prior to that she choreographed and played the role of Eliza in the Gateway Theatre (Vancouver) production of The King & I for which I received a 2014 Ovation Award Nomination for Outstanding Choreography. Some of her other notable musical theatre credits include: two productions of The King & I (Theatre Aquarius and Huron Country Playhouse) where she played the role of Eliza and served as Assistant Choreographer for both; the Dora award winning production of the new opera Iron Road (Tapestry); the title role in Golden Lotus (ASCAP/Disney); Angie in Tiananmen Dreams where she also served as Assistant Choreographer; the dancer in Fiddle on Fire which I choreographed and Starbright which she both performed in and choreographed. She have also returned to Xing Dance Theatre upon occasion to perform in such critically acclaimed productions as Goddesses of the Silk Road, The Nutcracker, and Rice. Other notable performances include the 2014 Mandarin Profile Awards (Fairchild Televisions) where she choreographed and performed as the featured dancer. Harriet also performed the lead role in the opening number of the 2006 Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant (Fairchild Television) and appeared as as a Red Guard Dancer in the feature film, M. Butterly, directed by David Cronenburg.
